1) Patriots Win the Super Bowl- February 1st
The New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28-24, and won their fourth Super Bowl. Tom Brady was named the Super Bowl MVP and led the team to a ten point fourth quarter rally. It’s the fourth Super Bowl win for Brady and head coach Bill Belichick.
2) Obama Asks Congress for Authority to Fight ISIS- February 24th
President Obama formally sought authorization from Congress to conduct a three-year campaign against ISIS on February 24th. The request covers airstrikes and limited ground troops. It specifically says the U.S. will not “engage in enduring offensive ground combat operations.”
3) Oregon Governor Resigns- February 13th
After being elected for a fourth term, Governor John Kitzhaber of Oregon resigned due to a pending criminal investigation. The investigation involves Kitzhaber and his fiancée, Cylvia Hayes. Hayes’ latest controversy involves her work as a renewable energy consultant while being Kitzhaber’s advisor on the same topic, a conflict of interest. Kitzhaber stepped down officially on Feb. 18.
4) Grammy Awards- February 8th
The 57th Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 8, 2015, at the Staples Center in L.A. Newcomer British artist Sam Smith won four awards; Beck’s album Morning Phase was named Album of the Year while Pharrell Williams and Beyoncé both took three honors. With her wins, Beyoncé became the second-most-honored female musician in Grammy history, trailing right behind Alison Krauss.
5) Russian Opposition Leader Is Assassinated- February 27th
A vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Boris Y. Nemtsov, was shot and killed in Moscow, on a bridge near Moscow’s Red Square. Putin condemned the killing and promised to lead the investigation into the death of Nemtsov, who had been an outspoken critic of Putin and the war in Ukraine death.
