The McLean Highlander Math League (MHML) competed in the American Regional Mathematics League (ARML) Local, a math competition hosted by McLean High School on April 26. The top thirty students at ARML Local qualify for the national competition, forming two 15-member teams representing the Northern Virginia region.
“ARML is one of the largest math competitions that we get to attend, which marks the end of the school year, so we take this tournament seriously,” said junior Daniel Kim, who tied for third place. “It’s also the only meet where we actively collaborate with students from other schools like Langley, BASIS and Chantilly to get together the best team possible, which makes this a very large venture for us to host it here at McLean.”
Several members of MHML qualified for nationals—junior Jeffrey Yin placed first, and senior Aiden Feyerherm tied with Kim for third.
“For the team rounds, everyone tried their best and collaborated well,” sophomore Helen Tong said. “For the individual rounds I wanted to not make silly mistakes because in competition math, you can make one small mistake and screw the whole problem up.”
MHML hopes to carry their momentum into ARML Nationals, which will be held at Pennsylvania State University on May 31.
“Last year, we were fifth in Division B and brought home some hardware,” Kim said. “We have lost a lot of great members from last year, but this does not stop us from outperforming our results from last year. We aiming to make a positive difference and prove our growth over the past year.”
