On March 13, the Fairfax County School Board approved a contract to add new stadium lights to McLean’s track and field. The contract authorizes $371,749.00 to be allocated from the Sports Lighting Replacement Fund to the new lighting. The Division Superintendent or the Chief Operating Officer will ensure the project is carried out.
The contract was awarded to Musco Sports Lighting, LLC. The company has completed numerous other sports lighting replacement projects.
Some student athletes do not see the replacement of the stadium lights as necessary but also acknowledge that the change could be beneficial.
“I appreciate the funding, but I had not noticed any problems with [the lights],” junior Zoe Adams-Christian said. “That being said though, they are probably very old and in need of replacing soon.”
Other students believe the updated lighting will be a positive change for sports players. Some have experienced interruptions caused by the faulty lights.
“During some practices, we have had to cancel because the lights have turned off and would not work,” junior Brooke Buursink said. “I think the funding will be a huge benefit to all of the sports programs that use the main field.”
