McLean’s Korean Club hosted a service event at Vie Village, a senior residential facility, on March 14. The volunteers prepared Korean snacks and traditional rice balls known as Jumeokbap, as well as a calligraphy event for seniors to learn how to write their names in Korean.
“The main purpose was to spread Korean culture to those that are not familiar with it,” said junior Daniel Kim, secretary of the Korean Club. “Through the food, culture or calligraphy, we hoped they could interact with Korean culture and get introduced to it.”
This was the second time the Korean Club visited the Vie Village to host a volunteer event.
“It’s important for us to share culture with the McLean community and do more than just having meetings,” said senior Hyeyeon Lee, president of the Korean Club. “We prepared everything together at the school, and some people even brought their own snacks to share.”
The volunteer event saw high turnout, a result of the Korean Club’s recent rise in popularity.
“We got so many volunteers, we thought it would have been overwhelming to take everyone that signed up,” Kim said. “We had to make cuts, so we brought approximately 10 people from the club. It was a very meaningful experience for all of us.”
