Starting this March, the Girls Leadership Committee will be conducting their annual Menstrual Product Drive throughout the McLean area. Collecting over 8,000 products last year, the committee is eager to continue an annual tradition and give back to their community.
“For this year’s menstrual drive we wish to raise more products than last year,” said junior Jimena Rivera Hernandez, the Activities and Engagement Coordinator of GLC. “But [we would be grateful] with any amount of product… as this event will have a positive impact on women who cannot afford products for their period.”
Any student can participate in this drive by stopping by one of the donation box locations and depositing any kind of packaged feminine products.
“We have several new locations all over McLean, including community centers, churches and grocery stores,” said senior Juliana Rudins, the peer mentorship project executive for GLC. “We will have boxes set up at McLean, and we encourage everyone to bring in supplies.”
Also during the month of March, the GLC is planning to gather to paint the rock at the back entrance to the school on March 11 and March 12 in honor of Women’s History month.
“We’re still not entirely sure what the design will be as we’re currently gathering input from our GLC community, but one thing we want to include is the ‘resist, persist and insist’ symbol,” Hernandez said.
Overall, the committee members hope that their efforts throughout March will continue to promote women empowerment and community amongst the McLean environment, as well as encourage new students to support the club.
“My favorite part about being in GLC is the community,” Hernandez said. “There are so many strong and passionate girls that I’ve met in the club, and it’s inspiring to see their efforts in fields that they want to pursue.”
