On Tuesday, the McLean Committee on Raising Student Voices (CORSV) held its inaugural meeting. The CORSV, unique to McLean, is a student-led body consisting of five representatives from each grade. Its mission is to advocate and negotiate for student interests to create a more inclusive learning environment.
Past accomplishments of the CORSV include partnering with the school board to enforce countywide asthma/inhaler training, mailing 2,000+ magnets to McLean families with staff contact information and expanding the availability of feminine products schoolwide.
“My freshman year, I was lucky enough to work with the CORSV to promote the feminine product availability in bathrooms at McLean,” said junior Aanya Jain, an officer at the CORSV. “ [The project] was super successful and [made feminine products] accessible in many bathrooms.”
At the meeting, members got to know each other and brainstormed potential service opportunities. This year, the CORSV plans to focus on revamping the Highlander Time system, making changes to the phone policy and strengthening support for English Language Learners.
“We plan on meeting with administrative figures within FCPS, [such as school board member] Robyn Lady, and talk about issues within the McLean community that we are truly passionate about,” Jain said. “A unique aspect of the CORSV is that we initiate change through impactful collaboration, and that is what differentiates us from other programs at McLean.”
Members of the CORSV look forward to making positive changes at school throughout the school year.
“Everyone was super excited to share their ideas in the meeting, and it seems like we’re heading into this new chapter [of the CORSV] with a lot of motivation and big goals in mind,” said junior Alicia Yau, an officer at the CORSV. “I definitely think that a majority, if not all, of our initiatives are going to land this year.”
