High hopes were the norm around McLean’s girls varsity field hockey team as they headed into the season, and it has been an extremely successful season so far, with multiple victories over local rivals and a litany of other opponents.
“Since coming to McLean three years ago, I’ve noticed that we’ve grown so much from where we were,” coach Shamsiya Shervani said. “We’re beginning to do drills with a purpose, which really helps our overall performance.”
Furthermore, the team’s bond has strengthened this season.
“The team has [grown] a lot closer and more cohesive this year,” junior Adelaide Thomas said.
Even with the improved connection within the team, they still see places where they can grow.
“We definitely need to improve our communication,” said junior Alisha Seth, team captain. “But it’s definitely on the upward streak, and we’re getting better every day. I’m extremely excited for the Langley game, as I believe that we’ll be able to beat them again this year.”
To foster a new generation of field hockey players, the team has implemented Youth Night, where up-and-coming field hockey players attend games, practice during halftime and help out as ball girls on the sidelines.
“It’s been really fun to incorporate the community as well as kids who will eventually be on this team,” assistant coach Mary Austin said. “It’s exciting for the young kids to watch the older girls play.”
With the remarkable level of effort being put in by the players, winning at a high level is becoming more of a reality.
“We could go all the way up to districts, finals and potentially win,” Shervani said. “We can do it.”
