On May 24, McLean’s Ethics Bowl is planning to hold a bake sale at 6:15 pm outside the Theater Blackbox at Mclean. The team hopes to utilize all funds raised for next year’s competition payments and preparation costs. The team often participates in local tournaments where they discuss and debate a variety of diverse ethical issues.
“All donations and money made from purchases will go directly towards the McLean Ethics Bowl account, which we will use to pay entry fees into competitions, scrimmages, etc. for next year,” club president Nathan Bass said.
The team has set their monetary goal to $100 and feels hopeful that they will be able to reach it as they will have the ability to directly sell their goods to students attending the theater Cabaret/No Shame.
The process for planning the bake sale has been thorough and collaborative.
“We met after school over the past few weeks to figure out pricing, what goods to buy and make, who’s bringing what, and potential allergies,” Bass said.
The team was founded in 2021 when the pandemic and virtual school limited their ability to hold events and gain attention from the student body. However, since then, McLean Ethics Bowl has slowly gained traction, amassing over 28 members.
“My favorite thing about the club is the pure sense of intellectual stimulation it brings,” Bass said. “People in the club really attend just to talk and come to mutual understandings on complex issues, and it’s so cool to hear a variety of opinions on everyday topics that carry a lot more nuance than you’d originally think.”
The team hopes that through the bake sale and increased community events, all interested students will consider joining McLean’s Ethics Bowl this coming year.
“To people thinking about joining – I say absolutely give it a shot,” Bass said. “The club meets once a week on Wednesdays, which makes it, not a massive time constraint, and the topics of discussion are always fascinating. There are also always snacks provided!”
