Following an impressive season last year, McLean boys varsity tennis continued their run in the second game of the season against the visiting Wakefield Warriors on Thursday, March 14.
For the individual matchups, McLean was led by Evan Ta, Wyatt Shinskie, Marco Zhang, Josh Bright, Max Vadas, and Colin Trinh. For the doubles matchups, McLean was represented by the pairs of Wyatt Shinskie and Max Vadas, Marco Zhang and Josh Bright, and Colin Trinh and Josh Chen.
“Going into the game, I was confident that we’d perform well,” Co-Captain and junior Marco Zhang said. “I stepped out of my comfort zone.”
Zhang won his match 10-0, crediting his win to the team’s high-intensity practices. With an exciting season ahead, the team has ramped up their training regimen, incorporating more drills and conditioning exercises.
“We practice everyday, running a mile every practice,” Co-Captain and senior Wyatt Shinskie said. “It’s definitely improving our cardio.”
The team won 5 out of 6 of their individual matches, with scores of 10-0, 10-0, 10-0, 10-0, 10-2, and 1-10. Additionally, the team won all of their doubles matches with scores of 6-0, 6-3, and 6-1, winning by a total of 8 sets to 1.
After dominating Oakton on Friday, the team looks to keep their momentum against Herndon High School next Monday, March 18.
“Last year, we lost in quarterfinals at states,” Shinskie said. “This year, we’re looking to win.”
