Since 2018, McLean Matters has been a cornerstone of the McLean Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), collecting funding, donations and gift cards to be provided to students in need. The activities of McLean Matters create tremendous and lasting impacts, even saving a family from eviction last December through their gift card drive. Their upcoming project—beginning over the next two months—will provide financial support to McLean’s seniors.
“[In this] next project, McLean Matters will facilitate support for graduating seniors by covering the cost of the All Night Graduation Party, as well as the cost of ‘graduate’ yard signs, to place in front of their homes,” McLean Matters head Emma Blankenbaker said.
Throughout the year, McLean Matters has conducted various activities to raise funds. Their efforts range anywhere from providing help to students applying for permanent residency to dental assistance.
“The donation program has been overwhelmingly successful due to the generosity of McLean High School’s parent community, and several local vendors,” Blankenbaker said.
Students can support their peers through McLean Matters by reaching out to the organization or donating.
“Currently there are 230 Mclean high school students that are at or below the poverty level,” Blankenbaker said. “Amongst other needs, these students do not have the ability to purchase their own backpacks and school supplies. The McLean Matters committee is important because we work with Mclean High School counselors and social workers to support students in need throughout the year.”
