CARDS OF FATE REVIEW
Cards of Fate, TheatreMcLean’s virtual play, is definitely a memorable performance. Available for free on YouTube, Cards of Fate is the story of an eerily powerful game show and its effects on the outside world. Nick, the contestant on the show, is asked a series of questions. For each question she gets right, she wins a prize, and something good happens in the universe. But for every question she gets wrong, she both loses her prize and something bad happens in the universe. The consequences become increasingly more dire as the play becomes more and more suspenseful.
The 30 minute long performance is not a bad way to spend an evening. It is a nice change to what one would typically be watching. The story lends nicely to a virtual setting, and all of the actors did well. Plus it is always fun to see peers or classmates performing, especially with not having seen them for such a long time.
While production, including acting, props, and setting, were all excellent, the play still had a lot of flaws that made it not totally enjoyable. The writing was lackluster. It also feels pretty disjointed, as though nothing really has any real impact. This could be a result of the writing, or the technological problems associated with performing virtually. It is sometimes hard to understand people due to sub-par microphones. It is a necessity to watch the play with Youtube’s closed captions.
Overall, while the play has its problems, it is still enjoyable. It is recommended for older audiences, due to some coarse language and disturbing images. But watching Cards of Fate would be a great way to stay entertained and support TheatreMcLean, which is always a great thing to do.
