Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 : “Operation Spectre Rising” Review

Black Ops 4’s new update adds lots of new content, but it’s playerbase is too small to enjoy it.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 recently got its “Operation Spectre Rising” update with multiplayer and Blackout additions. Including Specialists, weapons, maps and modes.

The newest Specialist, Spectre, returns from Call of Duty Black Ops 3. Spectre is a katana wielding free agent whose identity is a mystery. His active-camo specialist ability has been replaced by a katana.

Multiplayer players got the most content out of this map, including 3 new maps, a new mode and 3 new weapons in multiplayer. The 3 new maps are Artifact, a archaeological dig site in Iceland; Masquerade, set in the US Embassy in Bangladesh; and WMD, a weaponized Russian gas plant, originally seen in the original Call of Duty Black Ops.

Prop hunt returns from Call of Duty WW2, where one team is disguised as objects (like a table or barrel) and must hide and blend in with the rest of the map while the other team tries to find them.

In Blackout, Spectre has broken the hydro-dam and flooded the entire map, kick starting the “Wet-works” update, and causing massive damage to many areas of the map, like knocking over the giant ship at the cargo docks. The new flooded maps allows for many more areas to traverse in in boats instead of on foot. Blackout also got the “Bounty Hunter” quads mode, which lets you play as Spectre and use his katana to eliminate other players.

Zombies will only be getting some new Gauntlets, but there is no news of upcoming zombies maps.

Operation Spectre Rising was a large update for Black Ops 4, especially for multiplayer and blackout, but most of the content is locked behind a paywall, which means that players will have to buy the fifty dollar “Black Ops Pass” to play it. This has led to it being difficult to get into games with new DLC maps, especially on PC and Xbox.

After about 3 hours of playing the new “Operation Spectre Rising”, with probably 30 minutes spent waiting in lobbies trying to find other players, I give Black Ops 4’s “Operation Spectre Rising” a 2 out of 5. The content of the DLC might be great, but there are so little people to play with that it’s hard to get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Like I said for the “Operation Grand Heist” review, I still do not recommend spending fifty dollars to get the “Black Ops Pass” on PC.
