The baseball season for McLean High School’s varsity team has begun this year with a sense of optimism. In a road game to open the season against Woodson on March 14, the team won 13-0. In spite of then losing 6-10 in their second game at home to Robinson Secondary School, a sense of optimism remained strong.

“This year we have a lot of talent, we just have to put it together in games to succeed. We have a solid core of juniors that can do anything and everything, along with four underclassmen who all contribute in games,” said Connor Carroll, a senior who plays for the team.

Despite the team losing 6-10 to Robinson in its first home game, it showed signs of strength throughout. In the fourth inning, the Highlanders scored four runs on four hits, a throwing error, and a player being hit by a pitch. Also, in spite of giving up four runs in the first inning, McLean’s relief pitchers did not allow a run and showed strikeout potential after the fourth inning.

Carroll also lauds both the potential and the aspirations of the team’s seniors for this year.

“Our senior class has key players that are leaders and hope to lead the team to states,” Carroll said.

Senior Mitch Wasserman, a catcher for the team, also expresses strong optimism for this year’s season.

“I am really enjoying the season so far. I feel that as a team we have come together nicely and am excited to see what is to come for the rest of the season,” Wasserman said.

Wasserman also praises the competitiveness of his teammates in their pursuit of having a strong season.

“It is nice to see that everyone on the team wants to be competitive and get better. We are all trying to achieve one goal and that is to win,” Wasserman said.
