The third season of the show was released on Netflix and takes place in the Kansas City, Missouri area a change from the first two season which took place in Atlanta. For those unfamiliar with Queer Eye, the show features five gay men, Johnathan, Tan, Bobby, Antoni and Karamo called the Fab Five, that travel to different peoples homes and give them a complete makeover from their wardrobe and hair to their home decor.
This season saw even more compelling stories and memorable moments, including the shows first duo transformation. Here’s everything you need to know before watching each episode.
Episode 1: From Hunter to Huntee
The first episode of the season focuses a woman named Jodi who is a very outdoorsy person. She mainly dresses in camo and between her job working at a prison and maintaining the land she and her husband live on Jodi finds it difficult to make time for herself. The episode mainly focuses on a way for Jodi to be a little more feminine but still be her powerful, hunter self.
Sadness Level: ⅖
This episode isn’t that tear inducing. It does gets a little touching when you see Jodi get all emotional at the end of the transformation, but you’ll most likely stay dry eyed.
Overall Transformation: ⅗
Jodi’s transformation is more emotional that physical. While Johnathan and Tan did a great job on getting her a new wardrobe and hairstyle, the transformation really focused on Jodi’s view of herself as a women. Also she really didn’t need that much help in the food department, so her husband and her were able to go on cute dinner getaway in new look.
Episode 2: Lost Boy
Joey is a camp counselor that considers himself a child in an adults body. Because of his job Joey lives in a rundown trailer and often outdoors a lot, so he looks rather scraggly. Joey also has a teenage son who he only gets to see about once a month and he would like to make his living space better for his son.
Sadness Level: ⅕
It’s not a very sad episode. This more of a happy transformation and getting to see Joey with his new look interact with son will bring a smile to your face, but no tears.
Overall Transformation: ⅘
Joey was looking very rough at the start of this episode, but what the Fab Five did to him was pretty incredible. When he wore the new clothes and did his hair he looked like a whole new person. Bobby also did an amazing job with completely transforming joey’s new cabin.
Episode 3: Jones Bar-B-Q
The Fab Five tackles their first duo, sisters Mary and Deborah. The sisters own a barbeque business with little time to take a break for themselves. The duo hope to eventually bottle up their secret barbeque sauce and sell it in stores, but have been so busy keeping up with their business that they haven’t been able to get their sauce line rolling.
Sadness Level: ⅘
This episode definitely inches toward sad territory. For one the sisters tell the emotional story behind their sauce recipe which goes back to their relationship with their dad. There is also a moment when one of the sisters gets a dental fix and her reaction to it might make you tear up.
Overall transformation: 5/5
The sisters look absolutely stunning after their transformation and it is just incredible to watch. Also Antoni and Karamo worked to get their secret sauce bottled with a printed label. Lastly Bobby’s complete renovation of their business was amazing and it was really incredible to see the sisters reaction to it.
Episode 4: When Robert Met Jamie
In preparation for his wedding the Fab Five were called in to help out Robert. Robert is very self-deprecating and has very low self esteem, but deflects through humor. This episode focused not only on getting him to look his best on his big day, but also feel his best.
Sadness level: ⅖
When Robert talks about his insecurities it does get a little sad, especially when Karamo had him look in a mirror and write down positive things about himself. However, the cute wedding at the end is all smiles, so very limited amounts of tears.
Overall Transformation: ⅘
Robert’s physical makeover was pretty jaw-dropping. He looked like a completely different person when he changed up his hair and clothing. It was also really nice to see Robert cook some health food for his family which was a good change from the more fatty foods he had been serving them.
Episode 5: Black Girl Magic
Jess is a young African American lesbian that has been struggling with her identity since a young age. At age 16 she was outed to her adopted parents, who then kicked her out of their house. Since then she has been going from place to place trying to make ends meet and even had to drop out of college. Jess really just wanted to find her own look and her own identity.
Sadness Level: 5/5
A box of tissues is definitely needed to make it through this episode. Jess’ backstory is inherently very sad and watching her talk about her experience is heartbreaking. Bobby had a similar experience to Jess and seeing them bond over it is something very special, but will probably make you cry.
Overall Transformation: ⅘
The most amazing part about Jess’ transformation is not her physical change, although she did look so great, but rather her finding her identity. Throughout the episode Jess really struggles to figure out who she is in the African American community and in the LGBT community. Watching her finally come to terms with who she is something very remarkable.
Episode 6: Elrod & Sons
Rob is a widowed father of two who is still grieving over his wife’s death. After his wife died from cancer he has kind of let himself go being to busy trying to raise his children. Now moving to a new house in hopes of new beginnings the Fab Five help Rob move on while still honoring his wife’s memory.
Sadness Level: 5/5
This episode is really pulling on all the heart strings. It is truly heartbreaking to see Rob talk about his wife and his struggle to keep going. The most touching moment of the episode is when Bobby has a little cabinet made to keep of all the items that remind Rob of his wife and on the inside of it is inscribed a message in his wife’s handwriting. The tears were flowing.
Overall Transformation: 5/5
Rob looked ten years younger after his transformation. His whole look and the way he carried himself completely changed. It was also so great to see Rob slowly move on throughout the episode. Bobby was also able to make his new house look so incredible and that really just tied it all together.
Episode 7: Sloth to Slay
Thomas is a gamer who was rather shy and tended to stay more in his comfort zone, which was at home behind a computer. As his 21st birthday approach the Fab Five were tasked with helping to changing up his style as well as getting him to be more of an adult and to find his own group of people.
Sadness Level: ⅗
In the beginning of the episode it didn’t seem like it would be a tearjerker. Then the started talking about Thomas’ mother, who died when he was 11 years old. When Karamo and Thomas build a physical wall and talk about all the things Thomas is closed off about it gets rather sad.
Overall Transformation: ⅘
It was really nice to see Thomas come out of his shell and find his own group of people that have similar interests to him. He also cleaned up really nicely with Tan getting some nice clothes and Jonathan sprucing up his hair. It was also great to see Thomas actually cook something that isn’t tater tots. Antoni did a great job with teaching him to cook for himself and be a little more like an adult.
Episode 8: Baby on Board
With his first child on the way Tony needs some help from the Fab Five to get himself together before the baby arrives any day now. Due to his procrastination Tony’s house is quite the mess and definitely not ready for a newborn. Tony also hasn’t had any time to take care of his own looks which bothers his very girlfriend.
Sadness Level: ⅕
Not that many feels here. Seeing Tony propose to his girlfriend was really adorable, but was not very sad.
Overall Transformation: ⅗
Bobby was really able to clean up his house and get it all ready for a new baby and it looked incredible. Tony’s haircut also looked nice, but he sort of ruined his look by shaving his face after Johnathan had spruced up his beard so nicely. But he did look really good in all the new clothes Tan bought for him.
