Of the 200 places considered for Amazon’s new headquarters, 20 were chosen as the finalists. Three of those 20 lie in or nearby our nation’s capital. Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and Montgomery county were the three from this region.

There are many reasons why a D.C. metropolitan location would benefit Amazon C.E.O. Jeff Bezos. In places such as Northern Virginia, there is space for a facility to be built as well as easy airport access and many workers eager to assume the 50,000 jobs Amazon will be opening from its $5 billion budget.

As well as logistical reasons, Jeff Bezos is the owner of The Washington Post, and owns a house in the D.C. area, giving him personal reasons to choose D.C. or a surrounding area. Other expected frontrunners for the new headquarters include Boston and Atlanta, due to similar reasons given for the D.C. metro area.

On the downside of a D.C. location, housing prices are expected to soar in the chosen city, with an influx of new workers taking jobs in the region. Traffic would also be likely to increase in an already chaotic area. In Seattle, where Amazon’s main headquarters are located, the average house price increased eighteen percent in just one year as Amazon continued to grow and expand in the region.

A senior Zillow economist Aaron Terrazas believes that Boston, Miami, and D.C. would suffer the greatest price increase due to the already high prices added to the lack of extra space for many houses.

However, the Washington Metropolitan Area continues to be the favorite for the new headquarters, and would certainly bring big changes to the quickly expanding market of the region.
