The Oscars 2018: Hollywood women take a stand

“Well, that’s how it’s supposed to go, I guess,” host Jimmy Kimmel joked after the “Shape of Water,” was announced as the Best Picture. Although the 90th Anniversary of the Academy Awards was slightly less exciting than the slip up from last year, the show was still historic in its own right. The clear winners from last night were the women. This past year was a monumental year for women in Hollywood, from the MeToo campaign to NeverAgain to TimesUp. Women in Hollywood have been making a statement saying that harassment and unequal treatment of women has to stop.

This was a reoccurring theme throughout the night. This kicked off  with E! host, Ryan Seacrest, having an extremely awkward red carpet experience in the wake of the sexual allegations against him. Then  Kimmel took his turn attacking Hollywood’s mistreatment of women saying,“Here’s how clueless Hollywood is about women: We made a movie called ‘What Women Want,’ and it starred Mel Gibson.”

Throughout the show famous older female stars were brought on stage to present awards. Rita Moreno from “West Side Story” and Eva Marie Saint from “On the Waterfront” both received standing ovations. Frances McDormand who received the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” had every woman in the audience stand up. “Look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Don’t talk to us about it at the parties,” she said.

Finally, the three women claiming abuse from Harvey Wienstein, Ashley Judd, Salma Hayek and Annabella Sciorra, had powerful words to share. “The changes we are witnessing are being driven by the powerful sound of new voices,” Judd said. “Of different voices, of our voices, joining together in a mighty chorus that is finally saying: time’s up.”
