Prices Drop, Earth Suffers

As the price of gas lowers, the economy of the US rises. However, the US has been engaging in a practice that is detrimental to the earth- fracking.

Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is done by pumping millions of gallons of water along with toxic chemicals, which extends into a well thousands of feet deep. This puts pressure on geological rock formations, making them crack. These fractures cause oil to flow easily through. Oil companies have been using this method to obtain oil faster and cheaper. Fracking can potentially contaminate the air and water supply of areas near fracking sites. This makes the water unsafe to drink and bathe in. If an individual ingests this contaminated water, they could suffer from burns and potentially get cancer.

President Obama made a Climate Announcement on November 13, 2014 stating that he would make an effort to reduce America’s carbon emission by 28% over the next 20 years. The fracking revolution has been steadily increasing since this announcement has been made, causing gas prices to drop, which thus benefits the economy. This quick fix will damage the earth in the long run. American soil and air is being contaminated, and is effecting the lives of people living in area sites in Maryland, Pennsylvania

However, President Obama has made an agreement with President Xi Jinping of China to create research companies to work on the advancement of clean energy technology, such as the improvement of clean cars and solar power grids.

This research will hopefully create renewable energy that will out rule fracking, and save the earth while also helping the economy.
