Juniors attend a session during Highlander Time to learn about a four-year college pathway. Throughout the first part of the day, juniors attended talks hosted by college and career reps.
McLean’s junior class attended a variety of sessions on post-high school education yesterday. The sessions provided information regarding college applications and pathways after graduation, whether it be four year college, trade school or a different accreditation.
The sessions, taught by a variety of college and career representatives, were in a couple of locations throughout first and third period as well as during highlander time.
“I reach out to the college reps to see if they are available and to let them know about this program,” College and Career Specialist Mary Barnes said. “Most of them are fairly familiar [with the program] and are usually excited to participate if they are available.”
The classes included topics such as applications to international universities, college fit and college athletics and were intended to prepare students for a plethora of walks of life.
“We [had information about] the military, employment skills, resume creating, interview skills, networking and how to find a job,” said Barnes. “[It’s not just about college] we have licensing and certificates for those who prefer hands-on work to studying from automotive to plumbing or engineering technology.”
Equipped with this newfound knowledge of paths after high school, juniors are feeling more confident about their futures, whether that be college or the workforce.
“I went and saw what you should include in your college essay and about the different application processes for colleges,” junior Juliana Torpy said. “lt was super helpful and informative.”
