The McLean gymnastics team took second at the state team competition on Friday, Feb. 16. The competition took place at Heritage High School in Leesburg.

The individual state competitions were on Saturday, Feb. 17. A few of the best gymnasts were able to go.

Senior co-captain of McNastics, Samantha Simon, made it to the individual state competition receiving a score of 9.8 on the beam. She earned 1st place with her performance.

“This season has been especially memorable since it was my senior year and we have worked so hard to get to where we are now. I’m so proud of this team and everything we’ve accomplished this season and I’m really going to miss McNastics,” Simon said.

Junior Sara Vavonese made it to the individual competition as well, to compete on floor.

The team was very successful during their season and had to work hard to get to states.

They had to start off by placing in one of the top two spots at the District competition; they received first place. This meant that they were able to advance to the Regional competition which took place on Feb. 8 at Washington Lee High School. The team won the Regional competition with their own season high score.

McLean’s McNastics had to go against the top high schools in states. The defending champs knew that they had to give it to their all to represent McLean High School.

McNastics did not disappoint; they scored a 146.3 in the competition ending up in second place behind Robinson High School.

This was a long journey for McNastics, and they certainly gave it their all in these past competitions.

Since Simon is a senior at McLean, this was her last competition with McNastics. But, she ended the season by winning in her category for the individual state competition and will leave McLean this year knowing how well she and her team did as a whole.
