The 2018 Grammys

The 2018 Grammys brought many surprises and laughs. With second time host James Corden, there was lots of witty commentary, including the giving of “consolation puppies” for those who didn’t win a Grammy.

The Grammys ended with Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar sweeping seven and five Grammys respectively. However, many were upset at how many Grammys they brought home, while favorites were left empty-handed. Some of the most notable of the snubbed were Jay-Z and Kesha. Jay-Z has been a staple in the Hip-Hop genre, and his lack of Grammys angered many fans. Kesha’s lack of a Grammy, after being nominated for best pop performance for her powerful single “Praying,” was disappointing to many paying attention to everything she’s gone through.

Despite some of the controversy, it was historic for having a R&B performer like Mars to go home with mainstream awards like album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, and more.

Outside of Mars and Lamar, there were other notable winners as well.The winner of best new artists was Alessia Cara, best known for “Stay” and “Scars to Your Beautiful.” Ed Sheeran won both best pop solo performance for his “Shape of You” and best pop vocal album for “÷.” Childish Gambino won best traditional R&B performance, and the Weeknd won best urban contemporary album for “Starboy.”

Overall, the Grammys was a night of triumphs, laughs, and of course a bit of controversy.
