McLean in for a snowy winter

A new forecast predicts that Virginia will have another winter with high snowfall.

Unlike last year’s disappointing lack of snow days, students and teachers can expect at least a few more this year. It will most likely not be as severe as 2010’s “Snowmageddon”, or 2015’s “Snowzilla”, but the D.C. area is expected to get a solid 11-19 inches of snow this winter.

The higher levels of snow are a result of this winter’s temperatures, which are expected to be much colder than average. The chill is already starting to set in, with temperatures in McLean reaching the low 30’s in early November.

“It has already gotten really cold this fall, and it is only November,” senior Zeeshan Khaliq said. “I hope we get more snow days this year.”

The 2017-18 FCPS school year has 14 snow days built into the schedule, meaning there will be no makeup days added to the year if there are up to 14 cancellations. In the event of a 15th cancellation, April 17th will be considered to be added as a makeup day.

“I don’t think anything can top freshman year”, said senior Thubwang Amdo, referring to the “Snowzilla” storm in which there were several consecutive cancellations. “Still, I would be content with at least a couple days off this year.”
