The phenomenons of netflix and hulu are sweeping McLean High School and fueling tv addictions school wide. Students are eagerly seeking new movies and television shows to watch.
Students who like classic shows like M*A*S*H and The Brady Bunch will enjoy the old movie references made in Mystery Science Theater 3000, a comedy series feautring an evil scientist with his two robot sidekicks. The robots are imprisoned in a space station and are forced to watch awful movies, like old science fiction and cheesy horror films, for the rest of eternity as part of a psychological experiment. The robots make wisecrack commentary, referencing old movies to entertain themselves and stay sane. “That does sound good! My friends and I will reference things like an episode of The Partridge Family like my kids would to an episode of Spongebob Squarepants,” librarian Tina Ellerbee said.
Hopeless romantics who love romantic dramas like The Notebook, will be swooning over Cinema Paradiso, an Italian drama film about young love between two teenagers in the aftermath of World War II in Ginaldo, Sicily. Tragedy strikes and they are separated, but the love between them still remains 30 years later when they meet again in their hometown. “That looks like something I would like because my favorite part is the drama from the love story, but I still like how it always has a happy ending,” junior Ana Garvin said.
Adrenaline Junkies who love action TV shows like Breaking Bad will love the intenstity of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, a television series set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the 1920s. The series follows a ruthless gangster who is the lead of a group of bootleggers during the prohibiton era. “It’s very historically accurate, ” U.S. history and world history teacher Maggie Tran said. The characters encounter real people like Al Capone in the show, among other historical figures.
Horror Movie buffs who like psychological thrillers like Silence of the Lambs and Alfred Hitchcock Presents will love FX’s American Horror Story, an anthology series feautring dramatic plots like haunted houses, asylum mistreatment, and witchcraft. This show is unique in that each season has a different plot with different characters, unlike Alfred Hitchcock Presents where every episode is with a different plot. “The haunted house season reminds me of the Amityville Horror House, and since I’m from Long Island, I’ve driven past that area and the haunted house never gets old,” English teacher Jennifer Stark said.
