As students walk to their final classes, through hallways three fourths as full as they have been during the past eight months, they reflect on their successes and achievements throughout the year. One of the achievements still fresh in the minds of many, however, is the success of McLean’s spring sports teams.

Going into the season expectations were high for many of the teams.

In Crew the Boys Light 8 won states. While the other teams fell short of their lofty goals of winning states there was still widespread success. The girls’ soccer team took first place in the conference, while the boy’s team upset the number one seed in the conference to advance to regionals.

The boy’s lacrosse team took second in the conference, a feat the hasn’t been accomplished in years at McLean. Meanwhile the girl’s team exceeded expectations by advancing into regional play.

The girls’ softball team also took second in the conference, while the baseball team advanced to regional play. In track and field, Matt Ohlson and James Carver placed in states. Carver is advancing to Reebok National. Also on the track team Kelly Oler, Karynne Baker, and Caitlin Pane advanced to State competition.

Finally the both the Girls and Boys tennis teams finished a game away from advancing to states.

“It was a very fun season. The saddest thing about Spring Sports is that, as you get older and closer to graduating more of your friends are leaving. The other seasons there is always the rest of the year, in spring it’s all coming to an end.” said Junior Tennis player Martha McCoy.

Perhaps two of the teams with the loftiest expectations were the girls’ soccer and boys lacrosse team. Both teams went into the playoffs with the number one seed and the pressure that accompanies the placement. The girls were able to beat Yorktown for the conference title, whereas the boys fell short against cross-town rival Langley. In the end though both teams would lose to Battlefield in divisional play.

Once the playoffs come around its win or it’s over. Only one team can end the season without that final lose.

All in all, McLean spring sports were extremely successful across the board. Many people around the school and community haven’t seen such a successful spring sport lineup in years.

“It was actually really nice to have such an athletically successful school,” junior Taylor Stirling

said “you don’t see that very often around here.”

With the successful spring behind us, it might be time to look forward to the fall season of next year. But let’s not looks past the achievements of the spring sports just yet.

“It is most important to look at what the teams accomplished this season, I think everything our school has done in athletics this year is impressive.” said Junior soccer player Haley Mennes.
