FCPS should give less days off for snow

Students always hope for snow days. However, the truth is that FCPS should be giving less than they have this year.
Students always hope for snow days. However, the truth is that FCPS should be giving less than they have this year.

The majority of McLean’s students enjoy a day off or a two hour delay. Each scenario provides for time to rest up or get caught up with unfinished homework. However, this presents a major problem in the long run. Many classes are caught off guard and teachers go into a panic, scrambling to cram in work before a certain deadline. The undeniable truth is that FCPS should give less days off for snow or cold.

During many of the days that have previously been given off for snow or cold, it has been possible to make the daily school commute. The problem is that FCPS does not put enough effort or money into clearing roads. While Virginia does not typically get large amounts of snow, when it does the county is put into a panic. FCPS is unprepared, and does not know how to deal with the problem, as opposed to more northern states.

The solution is that Fairfax County should devote more money, time, and effort to ensuring that they are sufficiently prepared for snow at all times, whether it arrives or not. This way, when snow does happen to fall in the area, the county will be ready. It will allow for less school days given off for snow, and more valuable class time.

Most students may be against this idea, but they need to face the facts. Each time a two hour delay or snow day is given, a class falls further and further behind schedule. In addition, with every snow day given, the longer the school year extends. Nobody wants that to happen.
