Students Dissect Current Events around the World

A new club started 2 years ago and host meetings to talk about the world.

The Current Events Club is a club to chill, eat some snacks and talk about what’s going on in the world.

“The Current Events Club was created two years ago by a senior who since then graduated,” said Lindsey Fisher, Club Sponsor. After the 2016 election happened, the senior wanted to discuss it and thought there really wasn’t a place to do that. He then got together with his friends to talk about the things going on in the world and soon started the club.

In the club they take the major new stories since last they met which is every two weeks and can even be a month depending on how busy the students are. They will then pick a subject they want to discuss about and then break it into two or more sides and then discuss merits of each side. The main goals by doing this is to get out just not your own point of view on different news stories, but to also take in other people’s perspectives.

“People really get a chance to hash out there beliefs and better understand the beliefs of others,” Fisher said. She stated an example of a group of friends who were very divided upon a certain issue which almost caused a rift in their friendship. They decided to have a conversation and have a real discussion about the topic and agreed and came to a conclusion.

“The club is unique in that it formed out of a need to talk about certain things and that it’s not a competition, no major goals, no pecking order or hierarchy and that it’s just people talking about things that they want to talk about,” Fisher said.

The Current Events Club is a safe and un-pressured space to talk about what’s going on in the world, chill, eat some snacks and have fun doing it.
