Celebrating African American history and culture

The new Museum of African American culture and history expertly informs and entertains

Olivia Mooney, Features Editor

The Museum of African American History and Culture tells the story of the African diaspora within the United States. Since its opening the museum has been packed with eager learners. However a look around will show families of multiple generations, the old sharing stories with young, coming together to trade their own stories. The museum blends the celebration of African American culture on the upbeat top levels with a somber and accurate representation of the painful history on the lower levels. Exhibits range from go-go music to Angola prison and even a blurb on the history of African American museums. The curators have deliberately acquired and placed a wide variety of objects within the museum including Emmett Till’s original coffin. Since there is so much to see unless you start right when they open you probably will not be able to finish in one outing. Still the museum is definitely worth multiple visits.
